Waikiki Beach, Cheesecake Factory, International Market

Tuesday, 09-11

Today was pretty laid back for us out here. I slept in, as usual because I was awake til 4:00 this morning. Insomnia is getting so annoying! Anyway, I woke up this morning to the smell of fried okra, mashed potatoes, cornbread, and peas. Grandma and Aunt Rachel were busy in the kitchen and it made it very easy to get out of bed! I felt very lucky :) We had a big lunch and hung out around the house for a couple of hours. I talked to Jeremy on the phone for awhile. He is getting to call me more here lately because they are waiting to go to "the box". That is the major part of their training in California. The desert is actually set up and simulated to be just like Iraq. They go through real attacks and situations and everything. The only difference is they are firing either blanks or paint bullets. They go to "the box" on the 15th. After I talked to Jeremy we went to Borders Book store in Waikele. That is a town about 10 miles from where we live. I bought 5 books that were all on sale! I got Jeremy the complete works of William Shakespeare. He has been wanting that book so I'm surprising him when he gets home. We were at Borders for almost an hour and then we went over to the Big K-Mart next door. Waikele is a really nice, newer safe town that we would probably live in if Jeremy wasn't deploying soon. At the Big K we had Little Caesars for supper. Just a small snack because we had a big lunch. They have really cheap good pizza at that particular store so we took advantage of it! Then we came home, I talked to Jeremy again and watched TV and that was it for our day!

Yesterday was pretty easy too! We went to the commissary to get a couple of things and we took it easy again. We had gone to Waikiki the day before (more on that below)and so we didn't feel like doing much. After we went to the commissary we went to the Popeye's/Burger King on post here for supper. It was too late to cook and no one really wanted to anyway. We got home and I talked to Jeremy for awhile. He finally decided we ARE coming home for a couple of weeks in November after all. We will be home Nov. 2nd to Nov. 18th. He wants to see the leaves changing and feel some cool weather. He hasn't seen autumn in 4 years and he is homesick so we are taking a trip to Arkansas! The army won't let him stay for Thanksgiving though, don't even get me started on that story. So we will be back in Hawaii for Thanksgiving.

Sunday, 09-09

This was a big day! We drove down to Honolulu (about 15 miles) to go to the International Market. It is a huge outdoor market with tons of souvenirs and local things to buy. We wandered around there and had a great time. We had Sunday Brunch at The Cheesecake Factory. We accidentally ordered too much so we had to haul it around. Grandma had a sourdough burger and their yummy mashed potatoes. Aunt Rachel had a huge spread of all kinds of breakfast. I ordered the buffalo chicken blasts and a Boston Salad. The blasts were for everyone and we still couldn't eat it all. After we saw most of downtown Honolulu we got in the car and drove down ( a couple of miles) to a different part of Waikiki Beach. There is a park there where you can swim and watch the sunset. That's exactly what we did! We changed into our bathing suits and hopped in the water. We didn't like the beach there nearly as much as the North Shore or Bellows. It isn't as pretty and there is too many rocks. It is really a shame that some people go to Hawaii and only see that part of the island. There is so much more to it! Anyway, by this time we were hungry after our swim, so we got out our leftovers and ate them at a Picnic Table while the sun set. From there we came home! Here are some pictures from our outing!

See how busy Waikiki Beach is? This is the only busy beach on the island because all the huge hotels are here and the nightlife.
